The following list contains the functions that you can use to compare values or specify conditional statements. For information about using string and numeric fields in functions, and nesting functions, see Evaluation functions. Accepts alternating conditions and values.

Knowledge Manager Manual

Returns the first value for which the condition evaluates to TRUE. This function takes pairs of arguments X and Y. The X arguments are Boolean expressions that are evaluated from first to last. The function defaults to NULL if none are true. You can use this function with the evalfieldformatand where commands, and as part of eval expressions.

For an example of how to display a default value when that status does not match one of the values specified, see the True function. This example shows you how to use the case function in two different ways, to create categories and to create a custom sort order. You want classify earthquakes based on depth. Shallow-focus earthquakes occur at depths less than 70 km. Mid-focus earthquakes occur at depths between 70 and km. Deep-focus earthquakes occur at depths greater than km. We'll use Low, Mid, and Deep for the category names.

The eval command is used to create a field called Descriptionwhich takes the value of "Low", "Mid", or "Deep" based on the Depth of the earthquake. The case function is used to specify which ranges of the depth fits each description. For example, if the depth is less than 70 km, the earthquake is characterized as a shallow-focus quake; and the resulting Description is Low.

The search also pipes the results of the eval command into the stats command to count the number of earthquakes and display the minimum and maximum magnitudes for each Description. You can sort the results in the Description column by clicking the sort icon in Splunk Web. You can also use the case function to sort the results in a custom order, such as Low, Mid, Deep.

You create the custom sort order by giving the values a numerical ranking and then sorting based on that ranking. Use this function to determine if an IP address belongs to a particular subnet. Both X and Y are string arguments. X is the CIDR subnet.

Y is the IP address to match with the subnet. This function is compatible with IPv6.For information about the types of lookups you can define, see About lookups in the Knowledge Manager Manual. Note: The lookup command can accept multiple lookup and event fields and destfields. For example:. See Command types. If you are using the lookup command in the same pipeline as a transforming commandand it is possible to retain the field you will lookup on after the transforming command, do the lookup after the transforming command.

For example, run:. The lookup in the first search is faster because it only needs to match the results of the stats command and not all the Web access events.

Suppose you have a lookup table specified in a stanza named usertogroup in the transforms. This lookup table contains at least two fields, user and group. The vendors. The following search calculates the count of each product sold by each vendor and uses the time range All time.

Use the table command to return only the fields that you need. To expand the search to display the results on a map, see the geostats command. Have questions?

If Splunk software finds those field-value combinations in your lookup table, Splunk software will append the corresponding field-value combinations from the table to the events in your search. You can create lookups in Splunk Web through the Settings pages for lookups. If you have Splunk Enterprise or Splunk Light and have access to the configuration files for your Splunk deployment, you can configure lookups by editing configuration files. CSV inline lookup table files and inline lookup definitions that use CSV files are both dataset types.

See About datasets. Lookup table files are files that contain a lookup table. A standard lookup pulls fields out of this table and adds them to your events when corresponding fields in the table are matched in your events.

All lookup types use lookup tables, but only two lookup types require that you upload a lookup table file: CSV lookups and geospatial lookups. A single lookup table file can be used by multiple lookup definitions. A lookup definition provides a lookup name and a path to find the lookup table. Lookup definitions can include extra settings such as matching rules, or restrictions on the fields that the lookup is allowed to match.

One lookup table can have multiple lookup definitions. All lookup types require a lookup definition. After you create a lookup definition you can invoke the lookup in a search with the lookup command. Use automatic lookups to apply a lookup to all searches at search time. After you define an automatic lookup for a lookup definition, you do not need to manually invoke it in searches with the lookup command.

See Define an automatic lookup. After you define your lookups and share them with apps, you can interact with them through search commands:. Lookups are sixth in the search-time operations sequence and are processed after calculated fields but before event types. Lookup configurations can reference fields that are added to events by field extractions, field aliases, and calculated fields.

They cannot reference event types and tags. See The sequence of search-time operations. Was this documentation topic helpful? Please select Yes No. Please specify the reason Please select The topic did not answer my question s I found an error I did not like the topic organization Other.

Stats Life Statistics in Action Blog A World Without Statistics Around the World in Statistics ASA Statistical Significance Series The World of Statistics Flyer The World of Statistics Video Statistics as a Career At Work With Statisticians What Fields Employ Statisticians. This article may help you understand the concept of statistical significance and the meaning of the numbers produced by The Survey System.

This article is presented in two parts. The second part provides more technical readers with a fuller discussion of the exact meaning of statistical significance numbers. In normal English, "significant" means important, while in Statistics "significant" means probably true (not due to chance). A research finding may be true without being important.

When statisticians say a result is "highly significant" they mean it is very probably true. They do not (necessarily) mean it is highly important. Take a look at the table below. We want to know if people from different areas or who drive different types of vehicles give different answers to the question. We see some differences, but want to know if those differences are likely due to chance, because of the particular people we happened to interview, or whether the differences seen here likely reflect real differences in the entire population of people represented by our sample.

To answer this question we used a statistic called chi (pronounced kie like pie) square shown at the bottom of the table in two rows of numbers. The top row numbers of 0. The meaning of these statistics may be ignored for the purposes of this article.

The second row contains values. These are the significance levels and are explained following the table. Significance levels show you how likely a pattern in your data is due to chance. The most common level, used to mean something is good enough to be believed, is. However, this value is also used in a misleading way.
